The purpose of the study was to examine the role of visualization in three- and two-dimensional geometric problem solving. In a group administration by grade level, 114 participants ranging from 10th to 12 th grade completed two spatial imagery measures, one object imagery measure, a cognitive-style questionnaire, and a geometry test. In general, findings showed that (1) spatial imagery, but not object imagery, significantly related to problem solving performance, (2) most students revealed a strong preference for verbal and visual modes of thought, (3) superior performance in three- and two-dimensional geometric problem solving favored the high-visual/high-spatial students, and (4) two sub-groups of these spatial types emerged in that some demonstrated exceptional skill in two-dimensional problem solving and within those, a select few demonstrated exceptional skill in three- and two-dimensional problem solving. Each sub-group consisted of more males than females and students who had participated in an accelerated geometry track. These findings contributed toward a very limited knowledge base as to what may influence US students' weak performance in three-dimensional geometry.
